City told several times to comply: MTO
OC Transpo’s decision to pull buses off the road yesterday to address a backlog of mechanical inspections could have been avoided, says a provincial official.
City transit officials were told several times that their bus inspection process did not follow provincial guidelines, according to Ministry of Transportation spokesman Bob Nichols. This led to service reductions along 36 bus routes during yesterday’s morning and evening rush hour commutes as OC Transpo began pulling buses to complete their required inspections.
Nichols said all public transit organizations must comply with a particular clause in the Highway Traffic Act, which was last changed in 1990, and added, "OC Transpo’s failure to meet all of the legislated requirements was identified to them several times in 2006.
