- End public funding of religious schools: education activists
PROVINCIAL ELECTION OFFER; Groups to support candidates who champion their cause
April Lindgren, CanWest News Service
Published: Thursday, June 21, 2007 TORONTO - Groups calling for an end to public funding for Ontario's Catholic school boards say they will join the political fray by supporting candidates in the Oct. 10 provincial election who champion their cause."We are not putting up candidates but we are going to point out to people that the only political party in Ontario that supports a one-school system policy is the Green Party," Bryan Kerman, a spokesman for the One School System Network, said yesterday."The time has come to end public funding of religious schools in Ontario," the retired Ancaster environmental scientist said. "The question comes down to how we want our children to grow up. Do we want Ontario to be a group of separated communities like ghettos or do we want our children to grow up to understand each other, to appreciate each other?"Mr. Kerman said the newly created One School System Network, which is also concerned about the cost of running parallel Catholic and public systems, represents 10 different groups including the Muslim Canadian Congress, the Hindu Conference of Canada and a variety of trustee groups.Network members will hold a news conference tomorrow at Queen's Park to build public awareness of their cause. The one-school system initiatives come at a time when Conservative leader John Tory plans to campaign on a platform that calls for giving non-Catholic, faith-based schools the opportunity to "join our publicly funded education system the same way Catholic schools have already done."Mr. Kerman denounced the policy as "abysmal," saying it "obviously has more to do with trying to gain votes than to solve a problem for the majority of Ontario citizens."Tory spokesman Brendan Howe said the party policy does not envision creating more school boards for different religious minorities but instead would allow faith-based schools to become part of existing public boards provided "they adhere to the public system's curriculum and accountability standards."Education Minister Kathleen Wynne also attacked the Conservative proposal, calling it a "divisive" initiative that would create "a segregated system that would be funded by public dollars."But Ms. Wynne also rejected Mr. Kerman's call for the elimination of the province's 37 Catholic school boards, which educate about 675,000 French and English speaking students at a cost of about $6-billion annually.Ontario also spends $12.1-billion on 35 public school boards attended by 1.442 million students."We are going to continue to support the publicly funded system as we inherited it and as it is rooted in our heritage and constitution," she said in an interview."We cannot be distracted by a governance discussion right now that would take us away from focusing on student achievement and getting the system as it exists back in shape."Questions about the structure of Ontario's school system are becoming more pointed as many school boards struggle with declining enrolments that make it difficult to offer a full complement of courses.Earlier this year, 11 public school boards including the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, passed motions calling upon the Public School Boards Association of Ontario to lobby the government for a new two-board system -- one English speaking and one French speaking. When a similar motion was put to a vote at the association's annual general meeting last month, it was defeated by a two-to-one margin.

| Merde.
